The University of Cyprus (UCY) and the Commission for the Protection of Competition (CPC) of the Republic of Cyprus are organizing a conference on the protection of competition in Cyprus and Europe. The conference will take place on Friday, 30 October 2015 at 15:00 – 18:30, at the University Campus, lecture room Β108, “Anastasios G. Leventis” University House (1 University Avenue, Aglantzia).

The keynote speaker at the conference will be Bruno Lasserre, member of the Conseil d’Etat, the French supreme administrative court, and President from July 2004 of Autorite de la concurrence. Mr Bruno Lasserre will be giving a speech entitled “Competition policy beyond enforcement: how to foster compliance and spur reform through advocacy.

Ms Loukia Christodoulou, Chairwoman of the CPC, will be the second major speaker. Her talk will provide an overview of the Commission’s activities on the enforcement of competition policy in Cyprus.

Two faculty members of the University of Cyprus will give introductory speeches. Associate Professor Sofronis Clerides from the Department of Economics will speak on "Economic analysis and competition policy". Associate Professor Nikitas Hatzimihail of the Law Department will deliver a talk on “Private Law and competition policy”. Ms Christiana Sideri, CPC Director, will moderate the event.

Professor Constantinos Christofides will open the conference with welcoming remarks.

As important public institutions, the University and the Commission have a civic duty to engage in public dialogue and contribute to policy debate. In particular, an important aspect of the CPC’s mission is the promotion and cultivation of a viable "competition culture". This event is in line with this mission and can serve as a launch pad for further collaboration between the Commission and the University, especially the Departments of Economics and Law.

The development and consolidation of a “competition culture” in the minds of economic players, consumers, and society in general will clarify the benefits of competition and help cultivate a healthy competitive market environment. Such conditions can enhance economic growth through increased efficiency, productivity, investment, research and innovation, with the overall benefit of increasing economic and social prosperity.

The conference will be held in English and is open to the public.
