Seminar on 'EU Competition Policy: The Application in Cyprus and the UK Experience'
13/11/2002

The Commission for the Protection of Competition along with the British High Commission, is hosting a seminar on 'EU Competition Policy: The Application in Cyprus and the UK Experience', on 13-15 November, 2002, at the Holiday Inn Hotel.

The introduction of the seminar read as follows:

Cyprus successfully negotiated the Competition Chapter of the Acquis Communautaire in June 2002. Nonetheless, the current pre-accession phase is just as important in the process of fully harmonizing Cyprus Law with the Acquis, in terms of the proper implementation and active enforcement of its provisions, tasks which are entrusted to the Commission for the Protection of Competition. Furthermore, the liberalization of Cyprus’s network industry coupled with the opening up of Cyprus’s economic and financial borders, and along with the challenge of globalization, is expected to boost the national economy, to foster innovation and to increase economic efficiency. As a consequence, EU accession will most certainly attract a host of business activities in the island – mergers, takeovers, heavy investments, etc.

This seminar aims to provide professionals, whether they be lawyers, economists or large or small businessmen, with an in-depth and up-to-date knowledge of Cyprus Competition Law, focusing on practical aspects as well as substantive law. It is structured with particular regard to the successful and long-standing UK experience in this area, as well as the multi-jurisdictional dimension, and with systematic reference to the constituent provisions of EC Competition Law.

Among our distinguished foreigners speakers were:
