PRESS RELEASE: Publication of “The Protection of Competition Law of 2022"
25/02/2022

“The Protection of Competition Law of 2022” was published in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Cyprus thus coming into force on 23 February 2022. It abolishes and replaces the previous laws of 2008 and 2014 (“The Protection of Competition Laws of 2008 and 2014”).

The 2022 Law transposes the Directive (EU) 2019/1 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 11 December 2018 to empower the competition authorities of the Member States to be more effective enforcers and to ensure the proper functioning of the internal market.

In order to enable the continuous update of the public, the Commission will issue informational booklets in due time which will explain in a comprehensible way the provisions of the new law to businesses, lawyers, and consumers. The Commission will also organise a relevant informational seminar and will update its website shortly to reflect the changes to the law.

Loukia Christodoulou,

Chairperson of the Commission for the Protection of Competition

You can find the text of the 2022 Law here and a summary of the main amendments here. Both are currently only available in Greek. The English translation of the law will be available on the Commission’s website soon.
